Piano Lessons for Children: Getting Started

  • When to Start Piano Lessons for Children: Piano lessons for kids can be rewarding at a very early age. We recommend parents start kids between the ages of 4 and 6, depending on the individual childs’ attention span
  • Piano Lessons for Siblings: Often families schedule a 60 minute lesson for 2 children, with each taking 30 minutes, or in the case of a young child, splitting the lesson 15 minutes/45 minutes. Children ages 10 and older benefit from a 45 minute to 1 hour lesson to make consistent progress
  • Lessons for Families: Piano lessons can be a great experience to share as a family. Some students combine adult lessons with piano lessons for children to make it a special family time. A piano teacher from MTN can help your whole family learn to play piano together
  • Suzuki or Regular Method: Most piano teachers focus on traditional methods of teaching, however, if you’re specifically seeking the Suzuki method for your children, you should find teachers of that method in our network as well

Piano Lessons in Your Home vs. a Studio

When you begin piano lessons for children, there are several factors that become important to a rewarding experience: Convenience, Practice, and Parental Involvement.

Convenience. Choose a lesson location that works best for you. If you live near a piano studio – that may be your best option for cost savings. By choosing private lessons in your home, you are saving travel and waiting time, especially if you live in a more remote location.

Practice. Practice will make or break your lesson progress. Kids are more likely to practice between lessons if the instrument is readily available in the home, so be sure that you have the same tools in your home as in the studio, even if you choose studio lessons.

Parental Involvement. Prepare to encourage and enforce practice goals when undertaking music lessons for your children. Positive reinforcement makes practice easier, leading to faster results and lower frustrations. If you have a quiet space, music lessons in the home do enable parents to be more on the same page as the instructor when helping their kids learn to play.
